Surf camp Santander

Surf camp Santander is located in Loredo, just outside Santander in the region of Cantabria in northern Spain. The village is charachterized by a laid-back surf atmosphere and the beach is only minutes away from the camp. It also has a lot to offer at night, with the many surf bars and clubs providing entertainment into the early hours and if you are into some more clubbing it is only 20 min with ferry to the city center of Santander.

The region of Cantabria is the greenest part of Spain and is renowned for its beautiful surroundings. The lush, green foothills of the Picos de Europa slope down to huge golden beaches where prevailing winds, consistent Atlantic swells and the enormous depth of the Bay of Biscay, combine to produce quality surf conditions all year round.

Spring and autumn are the best times of the year advanced surfers, with consistent and powerful swell pumping in from the north Atlantic. Summer (June to Mid September) offers the best learning conditions where gentle breaks are easy to find and ideal for the beginner surfer. However, the summer period also receives big swells from time to time, which provide challenging rides for advanced surfers as well.

The average air temperature of the summer months is 21°C. In autumn and spring the average temperature declines to about 15°C. Since Cantabria is known as the greenest region of Spain, this means that the area receives a fair amount of rain. However the rainfall is seldom consistent and it is much more common inland than on the coastline where you will be surfing.

Surfari

Guided surf trips

Surfari is a great option for more experienced surfers. Every day there is a different swell, a different wind etc. This doesn't matter if you book a surfari with us. Every day you will be transported to the best wave of the day, no matter where that is on the Cantabrian coastline. You will be accompanied by a professional local surf guide, who will tell you all about the spots, how to get in and out, the currents, type of wave, etc. You will also receive feedback on how to improve your surfing skills.

The surfaris will cover many different spots on of the Cantabrian coast. For example you can end up surfing in the Island of Santa Marina, which is one of the heaviest reef breaks to be found in Northern Spain. Other examples are El Brusco, a powerful beach break that produces hollow tubes and long waves, and El Muro, a left-handed point break that brakes with a very good shape.

The following is included in the surfari:

  • Accommodation – standard or upgraded
  • Breakfast (if booked upgraded
  • accommodation)
  • Surfboards, wetsuits etc.
  • Surfaris with a local guide five days per week
  • Transportation to the best waves of the day
  • Pick up/ drop off at Santander airport or bus station
  • Free WiFi

Spring and autumn are the best times of the year for Surfaris, but Surfaris are also possible in the summer months when the weather is nicer but the swells are smaller. However the area does receive sporadic big swells in the summer as well, which can provide challenging rides for the participants.

Accomodation

Surf camp accomodation

The accommodation we offer is a great deal. Depending on your preferences we can offer you two different types of accommodation, standard or upgraded.

The standard accommodation is located at a camping site right at the beach. Here we offer a low budget option for all you hard-core surfers who don’t mind sleeping in tents. The great advantage of this campsite is the closeness to the beach, which allows you to assess whenever the conditions and the waves are the best.

Tents and inflatable madrases are included in the surf camp package. However we ask you to bring your own sleeping bag and be preapared to mount and dismount the tent.

The campsite has a good restaurant on site, a small food shop, and a small bakery where you can stock up with fresh fruit, bread and all the goodies you will need. The campsite complies with all European camping site standards and has hot showers, washing machines and toilet facilities.

Upgraded accommodaton feature private rooms at a small family run hotel in the middle of the village, a 5 min walk from the beach. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well kept. Each room has its own bathroom, TV, telephone and free Internet service. The bar of the hotel is a local meeting point that’s always open, meaning that all the locals pass through it even in the winter when all other hotels in the area are dead quiet. They serve a very affordable menu of the day and they show a lot of football matches so it’s a great place to absorb the local culture. In short, this is the ideal surfers hotel. Hot food, beer and excellent coffee are always available.
