Surf camp Lisbon

Surf camp Lisbon is located on the cliffy Portuguese west coast, 40 minutes by car from the centre of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Traveling to the surf camp you get to experience amazing castles and monuments in lush green surroundings, like for example World Heritage town of Sintra.

The area receives consistent Atlantic swells and provides great surfing all year round for both beginners and more experienced surfer. There are lots of great surf spots to be explored and the location offers the possibility to surf 3 different beaches without having to take any form of transport. The area is also well suited for Kite surfing (kite surf lessons can be arranged on demand).

If you have any energy left after your surfday, the small, relaxed town of Praia das Macas has lots to offer. You can enjoy anything from quiet bars and cafés to the most amazing sunsets, and explore fantastic local restaurants offering a vast choice of food. There are a few bars in the area where you can hang around with the locals, or you can hike over to Praia Grande where you find some epic surfer bars.

Both the air and water temperatures are nice and consistent year round. In the summer (May to September) you can expect air temperatures around 30 degrees and for the winter, no less than 15 degrees. The water tends to be warmer in the winter than the summer. There is not too much rain in this area and the late fall and winter swells are the best.

Surf school

Learn how to surf

The surf school is mobile, and the surf instructors check the conditions of the many surf spots in the area daily, to make sure they take you to the beach with the best swell of the day. You will never be more than 5 students per instructor, and the instructors speak Portuguese, English and Spanish.

We guarantee that after one week of surf school the complete beginner will be able to surf and the experienced surfer will have improved greatly.

The following is included in the surf school package:

  • Accommodation at the surf camp – standard or upgraded
  • Breakfast
  • 2 lessons à 1.5 hours per day, five days per week
  • Transport between the surf camp and the beaches
  • All equipment needed

If you have arranged your own accommodation, you can also book surfschool only. This includes 2 surflessons (à 1.5 hour), all equipment needed and pick up from the Sintra area (we can also help you arrange transportation from your hotel).

Please be informed that during high season (July-August) the prices will be slightly higher than below (€395 for standard and €470 for upgraded accommodation per week) .

Surfari

Guided surf trips

Surfari is a great option for more experienced surfers. Every day there is a different swell, a different wind etc. This doesn't matter if you book a surfari. Every day you will be accompanied by a professional local surf guide who will show you the best breaks of the region, places that just the locals know about, taking you to discover new surf spots where you can enjoy perfect waves surrounded by beautiful untouched nature.

There are lots of different surf spots where you can end up surfing if you book a Surfari at surf camp Lisbon. For example you can end up surfing the powerful waves of Praia Grande and Guincho, ripping the long mellow waves of Sao Pedro or mingling with the pro’s at the world famous Ribeira D’Ilhas

The following is included in the surfari:

Surf camp accomodation

The accommodation we offer is located in Praia das Macas, just 2 minutes walk from the lovely beach where most surf lessons take place. Depending on your preferences we can offer you two different types of accommodation, standard or upgraded.

The standard accommodation is in twins/doubles/triples or rooms for 5. All have private bathrooms and includes linen (but please bring your own towel). You might share a room with other travellers that book their holiday for the same period.

The upgraded accommodation is available for groups of two people or more and means you are guaranteed your own room with private bathroom. Also includes linen (but please bring your own towel).

The surfhouse is a relaxed place where you can chill out with the other surfers, play some fussball or kick back with a movie. The roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer or throw a BBQ while watching the sunset after a great day out in the waves.

For groups of 4-9 people we can also offer an apartment located in Ericeira, close to the famous break Ribiera D'Ilhas. The apartment is newly renovated and has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, kitchen and a patio. Please contact us for a price quote and further details.

Arrival

How to get here

Arrival to the area is easily done by air. Lisbon airport (airport code: LIS) is a major air hub and has several daily connections with all major European cities. Check with your local travel agency to find a good deal from your hometown.

There are thee main ways to get to the surf camp from the airport:

The more cost efficient way is to go by public transport - Bus to Lisbon train station, train to Sintra and then Bus to Praia das Macas. This only cost around 10 Euros in total but if arriving after 9pm in Sintra, you will have to take a taxi to the lodge as the buses stop running after 9pm.

Another option is to catch a taxi at the airport, which cost approx. 60 EUR. However note that many taxis don't allow surfboards.

If you let us know in advance we can also arrange for a staff member to meet you at the airport to transfer you to the surf camp. For this we charge 25 Euros per person, minimum 2 people per transfer. If single transfer, rate will be 40 Euros. This is paid upon arrival at the surf camp. We can also pick you up at the bus or train station in Lisbon. Whether you arrive by air, into Lisbon, bus or train, into Santa Apolonia train station, it’s only about 30 minute drive to the surf camp.
